Fireworks and Face Painting...

6/29/2016

The stage was set for a beautiful evening for fireworks and face painting at the Van Buren Eagles on Saturday, June 25, 2016.  The weather was splendid with sunny skies and warm temperatures and the crowd started gathering early.  The Ladies Auxiliary served up hot dogs and sausage in a bun topped with sauerkraut and chili, along with chips and bottled water.  Inside, Joelene Brezezinski from Cats Meow Face Painting, set up her table and the line didn't end for two hours.  Children and adults waited patiently, pondering what design to get painted on their face, while getting ready for some fun and celebration at the fireworks.  Thank you, Joelene, for donating your services, and adding so much fun and joy to both children and adults for the evening!

The sun set, darkness began to settle in, and the first of the fireworks went off with a bang, much to the delight of the crowd, cheering and clapping.  Oohs and aahs continued with clapping, whistling, and cheering as phones and cameras snapped photo after photo trying to capture the event for memories in the days to come.

Many thanks go out to Fire Chief Dan Besson and the Van Buren Fire Department for the good job they did.  Thanks go out also to the Van Buren Police Department.  The two departments coordinated the evening and made sure everything went off without a hitch.

Enjoy the photo slideshow below with a selection of pics from the Van Buren Township Fireworks and the face painting.  A full album of the photos will be posted to our Facebook page in the days to come, so if you had your face painted and don't see your photo here, watch for the full album on Facebook soon!

The Eagle Riders fired up the grill last night for their second Charcoal Grilled Steak Dinner of the year. Dinner included a generous sized NY strip steak, baked potato, salad and dinner roll and it was fabulous. The evening was sunny and warm; a perfect night for dining out in the Pavilion!  The fun continued in the club after dinner with many putting in their song requests and belting out their favorite songs.  It was another fab evening at the Aerie with great food, friends, and music,  a winning combination for sure!  Thanks, Kathy Smith, for sharing your great photos!

We had a great turnout to watch The Canadian Forces Snowbirds Air Show on Wednesday evening, June 22, 2016.  The show was held at Willow Run Airport but we are fortunate to be so close that our lawn provides the perfect viewing spot at no cost!  Everyone enjoyed watching the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, the CF-18 Hornet performance, and the Canadian Forces Skyhawks.  The Canadian royal cherries were a big hit and were gobbled up quickly!   Thank you, Andy Sanchez, for snapping these great photos and sharing them with us!

The Eagles #3996 Honor Quilters

The Eagles #3996 Honor Quilters met for the third time on June 14, 2016.  Members of the group are learning how to make a quilt under the expert guidance of Aerie member, Michelle Gueli, an experienced quilter who is sharing her talent with any Aerie or Auxiliary member interested in learning how to quilt.  The group is dedicated to creating quilts for all Van Buren Eagles military personnel who have served or are currently serving our country.  If you are a Van Buren #3996 member who has served our country and would like to receive a handmade quilt made especially for you in honor of your service to our country, visit the Honor Quilters page on our website at www.foe3996.com to download an application.

It is amazing to see the progress the members have made in only three class meetings.  The first meeting was spent learning how to read the pattern and cut the strips for the quilt blocks,  using a rotary cutter and special cutting mats.  At the second class meeting, members learned how to sew the strips together and cut them into perfectly sized quilt blocks.  On Tuesday evening, during the third class, members learned how to lay out the quilt blocks to determine the pattern they liked the best.  Following this, members began stitching the blocks together with careful pressing along the way.

Michelle has made learning how to make a quilt an easy process for everyone. Members are having a fun time while creating a gift made from the heart for those in our Aerie who have either served in the past or are currently serving.  Each and every quilt is being made with lots of love and extra special care!  Information on how to join the class is on the Honor Quilters page on the website.  Members who wish to join now will be in the next class, which should be starting in the fall, perfect timing for quilt making!  The photos below were taken during Tuesday's class...enjoy!

What a great night at the Aerie!  On Friday, June 3, 2016, the Aerie held a Building Improvements Fundraiser Dinner and what a yummy dinner it was!  Dinner was only $10 and included an absolutely HUGE center-cut, charcoal grilled pork chop, a humongous baked potato, stuffing, corn, coleslaw, and bread and butter. Everyone was stuffed by the time they finished, that is, if they were able to!  Dinner was followed up by an evening of fun karaoke hosted by Whitey.  The club was packed and the singing was great!  A total of $392 profit was made and will be used to help pay for building improvements.  Thank you to all who came out and supported this great event including all of the volunteers who helped put it on and those who came to enjoy a great dinner out.  We are planning to have more dinners to raise building improvement funds during the summer so keep an eye on our Facebook page and check the Events page on our website for details and dates! Enjoy the photo slideshow below!
