Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser for Suicide Prevention

1/22/2020

Suicide claims one person every six hours in Michigan according to 2017 data from the CDC, and it’s the second leading cause of death for people ages 15-34.

Sadly, one of our young Eagle members took his life in 2018, leaving us all in pain and grief, especially his friends in our Junior Order of Eagles. The group wanted to do something to honor Chris Brown and help prevent suicide, so Chris's brothers (who are J.O.E. members) and the rest of the group hosted a spaghetti dinner to raise funds for our State President’s Charity, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. We’re proud to announce that the J.O.E.s did very well and raised almost $1500 for the cause.

Their success wouldn't have happened without the help and participation of so many caring people. Youth advisors Jim and Nancy Shrove helped coordinate and plan the event along with April Brown, Chris's mother, and Madam President Lisa Ochalek. They also had help from Tim McKeen, Melissa Griffith, Janice Eaton, and all of our awesome J.O.E. members. Thank you for your hard work and caring hearts, everyone.

We also want to thank the people, organizations and groups that donated raffle baskets. Your generosity is appreciated. Of course, everyone who bid on a basket, made a monetary donation or purchased a dinner deserves our thanks, too. The J.O.E.s sold 86 adult dinners and approximately 50 children's dinners.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s website says, “Suicide prevention starts with everyday heroes like you.” The J.O.E.s are our heroes, as well as all of you who helped make their fundraiser in honor of Chris Brown a success. Thank you on behalf of people affected by suicide everywhere.

Please enjoy some pictures from the evening. Thank you, April Brown, for sharing these pictures with us. Finally, if you are in crisis, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting TALK to 741741.

Fisher House Michigan Fundraiser

10/23/2019

Our Fisher House of Michigan Fundraiser was a big success. The numbers are still being crunched, but we can say that the total raised was over $6,000! People really stepped up for our veterans and their families and we are thankful for each and every one of them.

Worthy President John Watkins chose Fisher House Michigan as his charity this year, and he chaired the event, solicited most of the donations, recruited a team of volunteers, and kept everything running smoothly. Thank you, John. You worked tirelessly to bring everything together, while also working full-time at your regular job, and we appreciate your efforts.

John's team of volunteers included his wife, Toni Watkins, and Diane Moore, Nancy McFall, Nancy Fruit, Gary & Kathy Smith, Thom & Cynthia Price, Ginger Bruder, Tela Fountain, Barb Tomlinson, Rozanne Ogger, Dianne Cullen, Dave & Kerry Droste, Virginia Truran, Lenny Wojtyna, and our Trustees. There are dozens and dozens of details that need to be taken care of when we host an event and these were the people who took care of them. Take a bow, everyone. You did a great job.

We also want to thank Catering by Kevin in Canton for the delicious meal he provided and Wicked Hipsters for the great music. Their lead singer had a sore throat but still made sure the show went on, along with a little help from some friends. The audience never noticed and the tunes kept on coming.

Our guest speaker for the evening was Katherine Hay, Secretary for the Fisher House Michigan Board of Directors. We thank her for sharing her personal story of how she became involved with Fisher House, and for explaining how important Fisher Houses are for our veterans and their families. We noticed there weren't too many dry eyes in the house when she finished speaking. Our veterans were especially moved.

We also want to thank our Van Buren Eagle Riders #3996 for their very generous donation. Their President, John Neal, and member Joe Poston, presented a check for $700 to Katherine Hay and John Watkins on behalf of Fisher House Michigan.

Finally, we would like to thank all the businesses, individuals, and community groups who donated money or items for our raffles and auctions, and everyone who attended and spent money on raffle tickets and auctions. YOU made it possible for us to help Fisher House Michigan and our veterans and their families. Again, thank you.

Semper Fi Charity Fundraiser

11/14/2018

Our recent Semper Fi fundraiser to help post-9/11 combat wounded, critically ill, and catastrophically injured veterans from all armed forces was very successful. We are humbled by the help we received from people, businesses, and organizations in our community and across the state and country. Thanking everyone in this limited amount of space is impossible, but we'd like to mention some key people.

Eric Calley, a veteran and recipient of the Semper Fi Fund's help, was our guest speaker. He brought his service dog Sun with him, and shared with us how he was able to get him with assistance from the Semper Fi organization. Meeting Eric and hearing his story brought to life the importance of the work the organization provides to our veterans. We are thankful we were able to meet Eric and Sun.

Throughout the evening, people bought raffle tickets and bid on silent auction items that were donated to us. Almost 50% of the money we raised came from these donations, so we are thankful to every person, business or organization that contributed.

Following dinner, the Classics Band played songs ranging from country to rock and had people up on their feet dancing. We are thankful they were able to share their time and talents with us.

Finally, we'd like to thank the Eagle members who helped with the fundraiser. Our Worthy President John Watkins chose Semper Fi as his charity because he is a veteran and wanted to help fellow vets. John, and his wife Toni, along with help from Diane Moore, Barb Tomlinson, Virginia Truran, Ginger and Keith Bruder, Tela Fountain, Gary and Kathy Smith, Rosemary Inman, Nancy Fruit, Jim and Laura McGuire, Keith Murray, Mike Cullen, Pat Pickup, and Sue Delongchamp all contributed behind the scenes to make the fundraiser possible. We're thankful for them and anyone else we might have forgotten to name for their help.

We are a “People Helping People” organization and the money we raised will enable the Semper Fi Fund to in turn help our veterans. Take a bow, everyone. Ooh-Rah!

We are seeking additional photos from this event. If you have photos you'd  be willing to share with us from the evening, please email them to us at
foea3996@yahoo.com.  Thanks!

'That's Amore' Cancer Fundraiser

4/29/2018

Our That's Amore Cancer Fundraiser, which raised more than $16,000, was very successful because of so many caring and generous people and businesses that donated to the cause. The money we raised this year is being directed to the ChadTough Foundation and their efforts to fund research and raise awareness for pediatric brain tumors with an emphasis on Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma. The foundation was created in memory of Chad Carr, the son of Jason & Tammi Carr, and grandson of UofM Coach Lloyd Carr. Chad died in 2015 from the rare form of brain cancer.

We were honored to have Jason and Tammi Carr attend our fundraiser and speak about the ChadTough Foundation and the importance of raising money to find a cure. We all share their goal of ending childhood cancer. Thank you, Tammi, for speaking to us that evening.

We'd like to thank Rex and Linda Combs and their team for all their hard work in making this fundraiser possible. They have worked tirelessly for years to raise money for pediatric cancer, resulting in more than $260,000 they've managed to raise so far.

Of course, their success wouldn't have been possible without help from the many businesses and people who donated items for the silent and live auctions and also donated money – including Nico & Vali's Italian Restaurant, O&W Inc., West Side Distributors, the Detroit Red Wings and Tigers, the Green Bay Packers, Carol Krycia, and many, many others. Thank you for your generosity.

We also want to thank everyone who attended the fundraiser and won auction items. We know how busy everyone's lives can be, and we appreciate the time you took to spend the evening with us and bid on the many items we had available.

We appreciate our very own Eagle member Clyde “Whitey" Allen, too. He donated his music services for the evening, and played into the night afterwards so everyone could dance. Thank you, Whitey!

Finally, we'd like to thank our Aerie & Auxiliary brothers and sisters. Your help and participation brings to life our “People Helping People" motto. The world is a better place when we all work together to help one another.

Enjoy the photo slideshow with photos from the evening!

Our Diabetes Fundraiser, held on Nov. 4, 2017,  was a big success because of support from our members and community! Thank you to everyone who bought tickets, bid on auction items, and made donations, like the Belleville Area Lions Club, which presented us with a check last night. Thank you for your generous donation, it's much appreciated.

We'd also like to thank Rocky Fortune for the great music! You guys never fail to please the crowd and we're happy you could share the evening with us.

Finally, a big THANK YOU to WP John Watkins & MP Toni Watkins for all their hard work in organizing the event, and thank you also to the dozens of members who volunteered hours of their time to help. We're blessed to have such selfless members. The Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center will benefit from everyone's generosity, and hopefully, one day there will be a cure for diabetes.

The 2016 "That's Amore for the Kids Live Auction Dinner Dance" fundraiser was held on November 12, 2016 and the turnout was fabulous.  The evening started with socializing and appetizers, followed up by a delicious dinner catered by Nico & Vali Italian Eatery in Plymouth. The live auction was fast and fun and held everyone's interest with a wide assortment of great items to bid on. All proceeds from the evening will benefit pediatric cancer research at the Charles Woodson Research Center, CS Motts Children's Hospital, University of Michigan.

A big thank you to all who attended and helped make a difference in the fight against pediatric cancer.

Our 2016 Autism Fundraiser is a wrap. It took a lot of planning, organizing and work, but it was worth every bit of effort. We'd like to thank Co-Chairs Rich Cetnarowski, Jr. and Kelley Sherwood for all their exhausting work to make it possible. We had great raffle baskets because of the numerous businesses and individuals that donated items for the cause. A big thank you to all of them! We also want to thank Cats Meow Face Painting, DJ Roy and Rocky Fortune for donating their services to make the Walk and Fundraiser fun. A big thank you to the teachers and students of Belleville and Livonia Schools for their help.

The table decorations and autism items you made to sell were awesome! Of course, we also want to thank our members who helped sell tickets, cook, set up, shop, and do whatever it took to get things done. Finally, we want to thank everyone for buying tickets, making a donation or attending the event. The children at these schools will be helped by your generosity, as well as their teachers. THANK YOU EVERYONE! (We hope to have a total of how much we raised soon.

The Autism Walk is finished for this year and we can't thank everyone enough who came out to support, and volunteered, for both school districts!! We had a great day full of walking, raffles, baked goods, music, face painting and fundraising. We want to thank everyone who helped in every shape and form, to put this walk together. It takes a team to make things like this happen, and this happened because of the wonderful team we have at our Eagles club. Again, a big thank you to all who participated in, and helped with, this event!!
